1862 U.S. Legal Tender $1 notes. The cost of the Civil War was huge in dollars and lives. To finance the war both North and South turned to paper currency issues. The Union issued $1 and $2 currency notes beginning in 1862. A second issue of 1862-63 added $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 notes. Unlike the contemporary Confederate issues, the Union notes were printed in smaller numbers with better specie backing. As the war progressed the notes traded at only a percentage of their stated values; but they also traded at a major premium to Confederate notes. Today Union notes are much rarer than most Confederate issues. The $1 note is the most common. Depending on condition these notes usually sell for between $100 and $1000.

On 14th January the Austrian Mint in Vienna issued a silver 5 Euro coin to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the death of one of Austria's greatest sons, Joseph Haydn.

Born in 1732 in the village of Rohrau near the Hungarian border, Joseph Haydn began his musical career as a choirboy in the cathedral of Vienna. After his voice broke, he studied composition while keeping body and soul together by taking on pupils.

His big break came in 1761 when Prince Paul Anton Esterházy, head of one of Hungary's oldest and greatest noble families, employed him as musical director in his court. Haydn conducted and played, but most importantly he composed pieces for the prince and his guests – including such illustrious personages as Lord Horatio Nelson and even the Empress Maria Theresa herself. She often claimed: "When I want to hear a good opera, I go down to Esterház." (The country estate in Hungary.)

A second big category of damage type we see on coins is fingerprints. The oils and acids present on one's hands can damage coins if left on the surface of the coin for an extended time. Initially, they can cause a fingerprint pattern toned area that is unattractive and lowers the value and grade of the coin. Left unattended, these oils and acids can eventually etch the surface of the coin making the fingerprint permanent. Even handling coins by their rims still allows the dangerous compounds onto the rims of the coins. Using a pair of soft cotton gloves when handling raw coins helps protect all three surfaces of the coins. Make sure you get a pair of thin gloves so that you can still feel the coin. Bulky work gloves make it harder to handle small items and increases the risk of dropping the coin.

Coin Collecting - Avoid Worthless Silver Coins

Worthless silver dollars for collecting purposes is any circulated silver coin that is only in fair condition and has value to collectors beyond the value of the silver bullion it contains.

This is an unofficial term used in the United States and Canada. Junk silver is not scrap silver. These coins can still be spent in the US and Canadian markets for the value stamped on the coin. However, coin collectors call them �junk� because they have little numismatic, or trading, value.

The Mercury and Roosevelt dimes, the Washington quarters, and the Franklin and Kennedy half dollars are the most popular US coins collected for junk silver. These coins, minted before 1964, contain 90% silver composition, with 0.7 troy ounces of silver per each dollar of face value. Kennedy half-dollars minted from 1965 to 1970 contain 40% silver composition, so they are collected but are not as popular. The Peace Dollar (minted from 1921 to 1928, then again in 1934 and 1935) is also collected for its silver value, which is high at a little over 90%. However, these are more rare and may have collectible value beyond the value of the silver.

Circulated Canadian coins - dollars, half dollars, dimes and quarters - may also be sought for their silver value. These coins minted before 1966 contained 80% silver. In 1967, they transitioned to 50% silver by minting both 50% and 80% coins, but by 1968, they were all 50%.

While not as common as in the past, many junk silver coins are still in circulation in the United States and Canada. People wishing to collect junk silver can purchase these coins for a small premium over the price of silver at the current time. Especially during periods when the economy is stable, this has become an affordable way to invest in silver at levels below bullion prices. Because these coins are legal tender, they will never fall below their face value, regardless of how low silver may fall. The current values for the coins listed above range from $.90 to around $11 US. The Morgan Dollar and the Peace Dollar have the highest value, and the Mercury and Roosevelt dimes have the lowest.

Junk silver coins have become a popular collectible among survivalist. These individuals have speculated that a disaster or crisis will eventually occur which will render the paper currency worthless and that silver will be the currency of choice because of its inherent value.

Gold coins have had a very long period as a primary form of money, only falling into disuse in the early 20th century. Most of the world stopped making gold coins as currency by 1933. However, gold-coloured coins (not made of real gold) have made a comeback in many currencies. How does the silver coin's edge look? If the coin edge should be reeded, and isn't (or vice versa) this is a giant red flag, since mint errors of this type are very rare. Also, if the coin has a seam around the edge, a bit of a protrusion on the edge that could be a casting sprue, or file marks indicating a sprue or seam was removed, don't buy the coin!

Another type of luster seen on United States gold coins is satiny in texture. Satiny luster tends to be less attractive than frosty luster but it can be very appealing. It was the first modern, low premium (i.e. priced only slightly above the bullion value of the gold) bullion gold coin. Bullion coins are also produced in fractions of an ounce � typically half ounce, quarter ounce, and one-tenth ounce. Bullion coins do not carry a meaningful face value, as their value is mainly dictated by their troy weight and the current market price of the precious metal. (If a face value is minted on the coin, it is done for legal or other reasons and it is nearly always significantly less than the actual value of the coin.) Gold has an international currency code of XAU under ISO 4217.

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands – A hobbyist with a metal detector struck both gold and silver when he uncovered an important cache of ancient Celtic coins in a cornfield in the southern Dutch city of Maastricht.

"It's exciting, like a little boy's dream," Paul Curfs, 47, said Thursday after the spectacular find was made public.

Archaeologists say the trove of 39 gold and 70 silver coins was minted in the middle of the first century B.C. as the future Roman ruler Julius Caesar led a campaign against Celtic tribes in the area.

Curfs said he was walking with his detector this spring and was about to go home when he suddenly got a strong signal on his earphones and uncovered the first coin.

"It was golden and had a little horse on it — I had no idea what I had found," he said.

Gold and Silver Maple Leafs Get New Packaging

Gold Maple Leafs and Maple Leafs silver dollars are receiving packaging makeovers, changes clearly mandated by investor disfavor with packaging that the Royal Canadian Mint has used since the coins were introduced. Gold Maple Leafs debuted in 1979, Silver Maple Leafs in 1988. The changes appear to be good moves, which should increase sales of Silver Maple Leafs and help keep Gold Maple Leafs the preferred pure (.9999 fine) gold bullion coins.

Since inception, 1-oz Gold Maple Leafs have been packaged ten to a tube. Because Maple Leafs are 24-karat, pure gold, they are �soft,� relative to alloyed gold coins, such as American Gold Eagles and Krugerrands. Further, because of the design of the coins and the tight-fitting tubes, it is difficult to remove, inspect, and reinsert 1-oz Gold Maple Leafs in their tubes without scratching the coins.

Actually, reinserting Gold Maple Leafs without at least some scratching is nearly impossible. Further, if the persons inspecting the coins do not know how easily the Gold Maple Leafs are damaged, needless damage often occurs while the coins are out their tubes.

Gold Maple Leafs carry the image of Queen Elizabeth II on the front, with a flat, clear field alongside the image. The backs have the outline of a maple leaf, hence the coins� names. The problem arises from the coins� really sharp milled (reeded) edges. When the coins are reinserted in their tubes, the milled edges often scratch the fields.

Then there is the problem with investors who like to �heft� their coins �to get a feel of them.� If they put four or five Gold Maple Leafs in the palms of their hands and �clang� them, the damage can be quite severe. Should a Gold Maple Leaf be dropped, rim damage is almost guaranteed.

As Gold Maple Leafs have been sold into the secondary market, damaged coins have become such a problem that Gold Maple Leafs have lost popularity with investors. The problem has become so widespread that many wholesalers bid only �melt� for Gold Maple Leafs, regardless of their condition. By paying only �melt,� wholesalers can profitably resell the coins for industrial or jewelry purposes if no buyers are found for the coins.

Gold Maple Leafs, like the Gold Eagles and the Krugerrands, are bullion coins, which trade for the value of their gold content, plus small premiums. Damaged Gold Maple Leafs do not mean a loss of gold; they contain an ounce of gold regardless of the scratching or rim nicks. Still, buyers do not like to receive damaged coins. This means that Gold Maple Leafs sold into the secondary market have to be evaluated for the degree of damage.

Some wholesalers refuse to take the time to individually inspect Gold Maple Leafs and separate them according to their condition. These are the wholesalers who generally will pay only �melt� for 1-oz Gold Maple Leafs, regardless of condition. Fortunately, the free market being what it is, there are still some wholesalers who will buy according to condition.

Yet the handwriting is on the wall: 1-oz Gold Maple Leafs in tubes will continue to lose popularity and probably will join Krugerrands, Mexican 50 Pesos, and Austrian 100 Coronas as basic bullion coins, which carry the smallest premiums in the bullion coin market. Still, the packaging makeover should fillip sales of new Gold Maple Leafs.

With the new packaging, each 1-oz Gold Maple Leaf will be encapsulated in plastic and suspended in the middle of a plastic card, somewhat as 1-oz gold bars are packaged. However, the plastic protecting the Gold Maple Leafs will be heavier and more durable than the plastic used with 1-oz gold bars. The new packaging should keep the coins from being easily damaged.

With the new packaging, the Royal Canadian Mint made another big change: 1-oz Gold Maple Leafs will now come 25 to a box, whereas the old packaging is ten to a tube. This change could further increase sales as 20 coins are common ordering units for gold bullion coins, because the world�s most popular gold bullion coins�American Gold Eagles�come 20 to a tube. As a result of the change, investors wanting �complete original packaging� will move up to 25 ounces.

However, orders for small quantities mean the coins will have to be removed from their mint boxes�but still individually encapsulated�and put in other containers. The new packaging also will require more storage space for Gold Maple Leafs than for 1-oz gold coins that come in tubes.

Although 1-oz Gold Maple Leafs will be a little more cumbersome to handle, a large segment of the gold coin bullion market prefers pure gold coins. Gold Maple Leafs have long been the most popular 1-oz pure (.9999 fine or 24-karat) gold bullion coins on the market, and the new packaging should keep Gold Maple Leafs as the preferred 24-karat gold bullion coins. (The market for pure gold bullion coins is estimated to $2.4 billion annually.) The new packaging is expected to debut sometime in August.

New packaging for 1-oz Silver Maple Leafs has already been introduced. However, Silver Maple Leafs in their old packaging are still available. Since Silver Maple Leafs were introduced in 1988, they have been packaged twenty coins to a sheet, 200 coins in a box. Each coin was individually enclosed in plastic. The new packaging will be similar to the U.S. Mint�s Silver Eagles packaging.

Silver Maple Leafs will now come 20 to a tube, 25 tubes to a container, and 500 coins to a �mint box.� The new box will be made of durable heavy plastic, whereas the boxes of 200 are cardboard. The new packaging should make Silver Maple Leafs more competitive with American Silver Eagles, presently the most popular 1-oz modern silver bullion coins being sold.

These shows rarely sell anything that can't be acquired elsewhere more cheaply, so don't impulse buy from these shows! Do a little research and you'll see the same Silver Eagles at $2 over spot price from major traditional coin dealers. Most of the Uncirculated Morgan Dollars I've seen TV shopping show dealers sell for $300 each can be purchased from a normal coin dealer for $30. Never buy coins from TV shopping shows!

These are coins with especially reflective surfaces and a look that can be deceptively similar to that of a Proof. How does the silver coin's edge look? If the coin edge should be reeded, and isn't (or vice versa) this is a giant red flag, since mint errors of this type are very rare. Also, if the coin has a seam around the edge, a bit of a protrusion on the edge that could be a casting sprue, or file marks indicating a sprue or seam was removed, don't buy the coin!

A nicely toned coin not only looks good (in the eyes of collectors), but the tone itself can act as a preservative, keeping the rest of the coin from undergoing a reaction to the air. Coins with a good tone should never be cleaned or polished.

The Perth Mint Lunar Series gold coins come in eight sizes: 1-kilo, 10-oz, 2-oz, 1-oz, �-oz, �-oz, 1/10-oz, and 1/20-oz, with monetary denominations of $3000, $1000, $200, $100, $50, $25, $15, and $5 respectively. An image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse; the reverse carries the image of a beagle. The 1-oz ounce ($100) is by far the most popular of the Lunar Series gold coins.

The silver coins in the Lunar Series come in seven sizes: 1-kilo, �-kilo, 10-oz, 5-oz, 2-oz, 1-oz, and 1/20-oz, with monetary denominations of $30, $15, $10, $8, $2, $1, and 50 cents respectively. As with the gold coins in the Series, the obverse of the silver coins bears a likeness of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Perth Mint Lunar Series: Popular with coin collectors worldwide

The one-ounce gold coins in the Lunar Series have become immensely popular with coin collectors worldwide for several reasons. Although the theme is not unique�other mints having done lunar series during earlier lunar cycles�timing seems to be perfect for The Perth Mint Lunar Series because China will host the Summer Olympics in 2008, one year after the Series ends with the Year of the Pig. Interest in China�and anything related to China�seems to be growing. By 2008, we may be seeing �Chinamania,� which would make the Lunar Series coins still more popular.

Another reason for the strong collector interest: Production of the 1-oz coins is limited to 30,000�a number that has turned out to be ideal for a collectors� series. The 2000 Year of the Dragon reached the production cap of 30,000 and sells at a big premium in the secondary market.

The 2002 Year of the Horse 1-oz gold coins also hit the production cap and is no longer available from The Perth Mint. Recently, premiums on 1-oz Gold Horses jumped, which suggests that wholesalers are out of coins or are about to be. If the wholesalers are out of 1-oz Gold Horses, they will be difficult to find in large quantities.

The 2001 Year of the Snake will probably be the next 1-oz gold coin in the Series to hit the production cap. Gold Snakes usually can be bought at premiums comparable to 1-oz Gold Eagles, the world�s best selling gold bullion coins. The other 1-oz Lunar Series gold coins that have not reached the production cap of 30,000 usually sell at slightly higher premiums than Gold Eagles.

Perhaps the primary reason for the popularity of the Lunar Series is the exquisite quality of the coins. The Perth Mint holds an uncompromising commitment to quality, and no other mint turns out more beautiful coins. Established in 1899, The Perth Mint operated as a branch of Britain�s Royal Mint until 1970 but now is owned by the government of Western Australia.

None of the silver coins in the Lunar Series have reached their production limits, probably because the silver coins are priced for the collector market. The gold coins in the Series, on the other hand, are priced at about the same prices as popular bullion coins, such as the American Gold Eagles and the Gold Maple Leafs. This means that by going with Lunar Series gold coins bullion investors can own collectible gold coins without paying huge collector premiums.

"NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM" means "A new order of the ages." The date at the base, 1776, refers to signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

Morgan Dollars and the Politics of Silver

Morgan Dollars, a series long favored by American coin collectors, were struck in great quantity from 1878 through 1904, then again in 1921. The coin has a colorful history.

During the 1850s, gold prospectors passing through Nevada on their way to California were distracted by flecks of gold in rivers fed by runoff from Sierra Nevada range in California. Rivers in Nevada generally dry up in summer, which interfered with the simple panning methods favored by these inexperienced and ill-equipped enthusiasts.

Even those who actually attempted to mine, rather than pan, Nevada gold became frustrated with the over abundance of a bluish ore that continually clogged their mining machinery. When the gold ran out, many cleared out and moved on, leaving piles of the blue stuff behind.

The blue stuff was silver, soon to be called the Comstock Lode, the richest silver strike in US history.

As gold miners became silver miners, massive production ensued. Plunging silver prices were next, accompanied by the plaintive cries of the silver lobby. Congress was sensitive to the silver interests, and their financial support, passing the Bland-Allison Act in 1878 as a palliative.

And what a sop it was!

Bland-Allison came to the rescue, requiring the mint to strike one silver dollar for every paper dollar printed. That meant lots of Morgan silver dollars, many more silver dollars than would ever be needed for circulation.

Year after year the dollars were struck. They piled up in Federal bank vaults, and in lead lined rooms at the mints. (I remember touring the old San Francisco mint where I saw the many silver dollar sized circular impressions in the walls of a vault where these large coins were stored, packed tightly in canvas sacks of 1,000 pieces each.)

By 1904 silver production had flagged, and silver dollar mintage ceased. What to do with all the unused, unneeded silver dollars? The Pittman Act of 1919 directed that more than 270 million of these coins be melted and recoined into smaller denominations. (It also directed the mint to purchase an equivalent amount of silver bullion for future silver dollars!)

Despite the mass melting of the Pittman Act, Morgan Dollars remain relatively large quantities in mint state. As such, they are one of the great values in American numismatics.

You pay an extra $20 but isn't that better than getting something worth $0 with your hard earned investment dollars? I always go with the high volume sellers.

American Eagle Bullion Gold Coins - How to Buy and Invest

American Eagle Bullion Gold Coins are an excellent way to begin and diversify any investment portfolio. Before you buy any kind of investment, however, it is important to know about what you are buying.

First, the bullion coins are 22 karat gold coins, made by the U.S. Mint, and is fully backed by the US Government. Originally introduced in 1986, the coins have become and excellent way to get into the gold market.

The reason that gold currently is a good choice for investing is the rapid increase in value, thus partly due to the decline in value of the US Dollar, and the overall scarcity of the metal.

All American Eagle gold coins, including the bullion, are made with gold that is from the United States only.

In general, all Gold Bullion coins can be quickly sold for cash at coin and precious metal dealers throughout the world. Technically, these coins are legal tender in the United States; the 1 oz. gold bullion coin, for example, has a face value of $50 yet, given the fact the coin is worth almost twenty times that amount based upon the market price of its gold composition, this is basically a symbolic gesture.

For the new investor, there may be some confusion about the difference between the Gold Proof coin, and the Gold Bullion coin.

* Gold Proof Coins: According to the U.S. Mint, are collector edition coins. They are minted through a special process that 'begins by manually feeding burnished coin blanks into presses fitted with special dies. Each coin is struck multiple times so the softly frosted, yet detailed images seem to float above a mirror-like field'. All Gold proof coins come packaged with a certificate of authenticity in a protective case and mounted in a satin-lined blue velvet case. They are originally available for sale directly from the Mint.

* Gold Bullion: These coins are not purchased for their rarity or age. They are purely meant as a way to acquire a position in gold as a precious metal. The gold market dictates the price they will sell for at the time of purchase. Unlike the proof coins, the American Eagle Gold Bullion coins must be acquired through an authorized dealer.

When investing in gold bullion coins, fitting the Gold Bullion Coins into a portfolio is typically done as a hedge against inflation. During the 1970's, a time of historic inflationary pressure, for example, an investor would have been much better off had he owned a portfolio consisting largely of gold. However, throughout the 1990's bull market, however, gold bullion was an under performer and would have resulted in sub-par returns on a compounded basis for the decade.

Currently with the US economy in recession, and inflationary pressures on the horizon, the timing for gold investing appears to be positive.

One of the best ways to arm yourself against the savvy coin dealer is knowing the wholesale prices he pays for his coins. A very widely-used standard in U.S. coins is the "Grey Sheet," sometimes referred to as the "CDN." This is the Coin Dealer Newsletter, which is printed on grey paper stock, and comes out weekly. Most serious coin dealers subscribe to this publication, which lists the "bid" and "ask" values for every major type of U.S. coin, plus mint sets, slabbed coins, and banknotes (called the "green sheet.") "Bid" prices are the prices that dealers are paying if another dealer brings the coins to them. "Ask" prices are the prices for coins a dealers asks to buy. For example, if I call and ask to buy 100 common date Silver Eagles, I'll be quoted the "ask," or selling price. But if I want to sell the 100 Silver Eagles, I'll be quoted the "bid" or buying price. The difference between the two prices is the profit margin. It is quite thin for most coins.

After the US Civil War (1865-1935), the US government created charters for private banks to print paper money which was backed by the US Government. There were a very large number of national banks chartered from all over the USA (e.g. Nashville, Tennessee; Key West, Florida; Bismarck, North Dakota; L.A., California). The 1821 on the lower left commemorates the year of Mexico's independence. The date on the right indicates year of mintage. The reverse of the coin depicts the Mexican coat of arms, a Mexican golden eagle devouring a snake while perched atop a cactus.
