Most U.S. Federal Reserve Bank Notes are common, although all notes issued from the Dallas bank are rare and some from other district banks are scarce. All Star Note Federal Reserve Bank Notes are scarce. The Standard Guide to Small Size U.S. Paper Money (1928 to date), by Dean Oakes and John Schwartz, is recommended for more information.

Why not buy from a very well respected store to make the whole process easier? (As an aside, buying gold is really easy and there is no reason to be intimidated at all.) Now, let's say you have bought gold at least one time before. You're a more seasoned gold investor. Then, it's time to consider buying gold and silver investments on Ebay. Ebay offers a goldmine of opportunity if you are patient and know what you're doing. It's time to make some great investments in gold and silver coins, bars, and bullion.

Number One on my avoid list is the TV shopping show dealers and premium "Mints" out there that sell nice looking commemorative coins for premium prices, but that have no value beyond their bullion (if they have any) when you must eventually sell them. Some of these "Mints" sell on the TV and cable-based shopping channels, and the prices they charge when they do sell genuine U.S. Mint coins are nearly always several times higher than the price the coins would cost from a normal coin dealer! These shows rarely sell anything that can't be acquired elsewhere more cheaply, so don't impulse buy from these shows! Do a little research and you'll see the same Silver Eagles at $2 over spot price from major traditional coin dealers. Most of the Uncirculated Morgan Dollars I've seen TV shopping show dealers sell for $300 each can be purchased from a normal coin dealer for $30. Never buy coins from TV shopping shows!

There are two interesting subtypes of prooflike coins that the collector should be aware of. The first are coins that are Deep Mirror Prooflike. These are coins with especially reflective surfaces and a look that can be deceptively similar to that of a Proof. As an example, there are certain gold dollars from the 1880's that are extremely hard to tell apart from Proofs. Generally speaking, many of the gold coins that are designated as Deep Mirror Prooflike by NGC command strong premiums, especially for issues that are generally seen with frosty or satiny surfaces.

As collectors' items, banknotes have distinct advantages over stamps and coins: They have a much larger surface area, creating more room for interesting information and attractive artwork. Compared to a coin, a banknote is extremely lightweight and thin, making a large collection much easier to store and transport. Over the postage stamp, the banknote has the advantage of having two sides, and again, a much larger surface area.

Make sure the seller has a return policy that will allow you a refund if you are not satisfied with the coin. This is especially important if you are buying a non-certified coin. You want the option to return it if your grading service returns a lower grade than you bought it at.

Bullion coins are an excellent investment option. You can go in for the American Eagle, Canadian Maple Leaf, Britannia or the Australian Nugget. The American Eagle Gold coins were minted first in 1986 and hold pride of place as the world's leading gold coin investment option. These gold coins are struck in 22 karat gold with the total weight as stamped on the reverse of the coin. Silver and copper are also used so as to protect the gold finish. Special dyes are used to strike these gold coins to ensure that minute details are visible. Such American Gold Eagles can be bought at dealers of precious metals and coins. You can buy them at the prevailing price of gold and a premium for distribution costs. Gold coins are universally recognized and can be easily sold. The South African Krugerrand was the first gold bullion coin that was marketed as an investment opportunity. The one-ounce Kruggerand gold bullion coin is extremely popular.

Frosty luster is considered a plus by most collectors. Unfortunately, this sort of luster is becoming harder to find as more and more gold coins are chemically treated. Coins with original frosty luster have what I call a wagon wheel effect where the luster flows clockwise and appears to almost radiate out from the center of the coin.

Gold bullion coins usually come in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 and 1/20 oz. sizes. Most countries have one design that remains constant each year; others have variations each year, and in most cases each coin is dated. A 1/10th oz bullion coin is about the same size as a U.S. dime. A 1 oz. gold bullion coin is about the size of a U.S. half dollar.

In 1775 American colonists issued paper currency for the Continental Congress to finance the Revolutionary War. The notes were backed by the "anticipation" of tax revenues. Without solid backing and easily counterfeited, the notes quickly became devalued, giving rise to the phrase "not worth a Continental."

Gold & Silver Coin Bullion News

A bad investment are "spurious set" coins. This is another popular TV shopping show product, plus they're found in magazines and swap meets quite often. "Spurious sets," by my definition, are sets that are put together out of lower grade and/or common coins according to some kind of theme. The coins are usually placed in fancy plastic holders, with nice quality packaging, and then you pay $38.99 for a set of five coins that are worth $2.99 just because they were all minted during World War II, or the Vietnam War, or because they're from around the world and commemorate Marilyn Monroe or some sort of cartoon characters. Such coins are usually genuine, and will probably appreciate in value, but they probably won't be worth what you paid for them anytime during the next five generations! These are a favorite of dealers like Littleton.

As with stocks, gold investors may base their investment decision partly on, or solely on, technical analysis. Typically, this involves analyzing chart patterns, moving averages, market trends and/or the economic cycle in order to speculate on the future price.
