Shortly after Columbus discovered the 'New World,' vast amounts of gold were discovered in Mexico. Once turned into coins, Spanish fleets transported the us gold coins through the Gulf of Mexico to deliver to the King and Queen of Spain. Often, these fleets encountered danger, running into hurricanes, losing ships and the precious cargo.
In 1810, Miguel Hidalgo declared independence from the rule of Spain, although full independence of Mexico was not achieved until 1821. From 1821 to 1917, Mexico went through considerable political upheavals. The coinage remained based on Spanish coin types until the adoption of decimal currency in 1864 based on the peso.
Some of the most beautiful gold coins in the world are the Mexican gold peso coins. The Mexican 50 Peso coin (also known as 'Centenario') is definitely the most striking one.
The 50 Peso coin was issued from 1921 to 1947 honoring the 100th anniversary of Mexico's independence from Spain. 'El Angel de la Independencia' (the Angel of Independence) is pictured on the coin, with a laurel wreath in her right hand and broken chains in her left. The 1821 on the lower left commemorates the year of Mexico's independence. The date on the right indicates year of mintage. The reverse of the coin depicts the Mexican coat of arms, a Mexican golden eagle devouring a snake while perched atop a cactus.
When Americans regained the right to own gold bullion in 1974, Mexican 50 Pesos, quickly become one of the gold bullion industry's standard bearers. It is the ideal coin for gold buyers who want low premium gold coins, coins that have small markups over spot.

How does the silver coin's edge look? If the coin edge should be reeded, and isn't (or vice versa) this is a giant red flag, since mint errors of this type are very rare. Also, if the coin has a seam around the edge, a bit of a protrusion on the edge that could be a casting sprue, or file marks indicating a sprue or seam was removed, don't buy the coin!

One of the reasons there is such a disparity between what the average consumer expects, and what the coin dealer actually delivers when it comes to buying coins from the public is that coin dealers see vast amounts of common "junk." By "junk" I mean common date wheat pennies, circulated Buffalo Nickels and Mercury Dimes, worn Washington Quarters and circulated Franklin and Kennedy Halves. Coin dealers are offered so much of this type of material that many of them get tired of seeing it. They give such material the cursory once-over and offer low-ball prices for it based on long experience. Usually people have already pulled out the more valuable coins, leaving the "junk," (or at least the the dealer must assume so.)

South Africa minted its first gold coin called the Krugerrand in 1967. This coin has no face value but merely stands as a symbol. It is made of 1 ounce of gold and can be purchased for investment purposes. Since then other countries also minted bullion coins. Canada made the Gold Maple Leaf in 1979 and Australia made the Nugget in 1981. These two are much more popular than the South African coin because of its 24 carat purity.

Most importantly, collect paper money for fun. As a beginner, don't collect as an investment or for profit. Just buy the bank notes you like and have fun doing it!
Buy silver dollars for a great investment.
Most paper money dealers don't have stores in the same sense as coin dealers. Most transactions occur through the mail and over the phone. It may seem less than ideal initially, but it works very well. Nearly every dealer who works through the mail offers a money-back, no-questions-asked policy. If the note you buy is not really the one you want, you can almost always return it.
